When Multistudio set out to design a new studio for their San Francisco team, Mark was honored to be tapped to lead the project, knowing that his colleagues, themselves architects, would be among the most discerning clients imaginable. The project carried a unique dynamic, designing for people who speak the same language and hold the same standards, and navigating that relationship with care became one of its defining challenges.
The project began at the height of the pandemic, which shaped its earliest and most critical phase. Through an intensive programming process, the Mark led broader conversations about the future of the workplace, weighing how shifting attitudes toward where and how people work should inform their own studio culture. These discussions were as much philosophical as they were practical, and their outcomes laid the foundation for every design decision that followed.
Mark played a key role in establishing the project budget and in determining where resources could make the greatest impact. By identifying and prioritizing high-impact spaces, he helped ensure that the investment was directed where it would most meaningfully shape the day-to-day experience of the people who would inhabit the studio.
Rather than impose a fixed vision, the project embraced uncertainty - designing for adaptability from the start. The raw structural shell of the building is left exposed, paired with a simple, honest material palette that keeps the focus on the work. Flexible layouts and open sightlines encourage constant collaboration while allowing the space to shift as the practice evolves.
The result is a studio that doesn't dictate how work happens - it makes room for however work needs to happen.
