As his first workplace project, Mark served as Project Architect, working closely alongside a senior project designer to deliver the project from design through completion. This engagement proved foundational, not only in developing his technical skills, but in shaping his understanding of client relationships as a cornerstone of architectural practice.
The project introduced Mark to the distinctive regulatory landscape of the Port of San Francisco, requiring careful navigation of a jurisdiction with its own permitting processes and stakeholder dynamics. His ability to adapt to these nuances helped establish a strong working relationship with the client, one that extended well beyond a single project.
The success of the project led directly to a sustained partnership, generating multiple follow-on projects across several states. In that expanded role, Mark collaborated with the client to develop cohesive design standards for their facilities portfolio and built expertise in the varied local permitting requirements across each new location, experience that continues to inform his approach to complex, multi-jurisdictional work.
As Prologis looked toward the future within the historical Pier 1, they asked the design team to provide a vision for an innovative workplace that aligns technology, flexibility, and work-styles to suit their dynamic workforce.
A clear central spatial organization offers a number of collaborative areas for staff, and gives each person access to a variety of work-style choices. One of the most significant design features is the ‘living room,’ a large multi-use space that gives Prologis the flexibility to adapt the space for specific functions, including all-hands staff meetings, community and corporate dinners and events, and a casual social café.
The people-centered redesign of the headquarters employs healthy design strategies throughout, from maximizing views and daylight, to open stairs encouraging increased physical activity, and large green walls.
